Taylor & Winterflood

Thomas TAYLOR bc 1742 married Mary STUBBING in 1768 (Banns were called on 16 October). She was the daughter of John STUBBING and his second wife, Elizabeth HODSON, and although living in Bartlow at the time of her marriage, she was baptised in Castle Camps on 26 August 1739.  Thomas and Mary were married for 50 years when she died in 1819 at the age of 80. He died in August a year later aged 78 and was buried on 8 August 1820.

Their known family (all baptised in Castle Camps):

  • Ann bp 19 Jun 1769 and buried a month later on 26 Jul 1769.
  • Elizabeth bp 19 Jun 1769 and buried 9th July
  • Thomas bp 6 Apr 1771. He possibly married Margaret (maiden name unknown) and had children William, (c1803), Thomas (1805), Henry (1808), Ann (1810), Charles (1810), Ellen (1810) and Sophia (1813), William and Thomas were convicted of stealing £12 from Charles Wilson's house in 1828 and transported to New South Wales, Australia on the "Lord Melville" in 1829.
  • James bp 5 Nov 1774 and buried 21 Nov 1808, possibly married to Mary with son Daniel baptised in 1795.
  • William bp 9 Mar 1777
  • John bp 23 Apr 1780

William TAYLOR married Sarah ROOKES - the banns were called in Withersfield, Suffolk (22 Nov) and Castle Camps (11 Nov) 1798. Sarah was born in Haverhill, Suffolk, in 1777 - the daughter of John ROOKS and Ann née GREEN.

  • Mary bp 12 Apr 1802 (mother listed as Mary)
  • Rebecca bp 15 Apr 1804. She married John William HOUSEMAN in Worcester in 1829 and they baptised a son in Castle Camps in June of that year (who died when he was 1). Rebecca married George LANNING in the Independants Chapel, in Paddington in 1845. It seems likely that George was her brother-in-law - the husband of her elder sister Mary who had died in 1838. She died in the Union Infirmary in Wandsworth on 6 July 1893.
  • Charlotte bp 1 Feb 1807 married 27 Jun 1824 Thomas STARNS and had children Job (1827), Mahalah (1830), William (1832), Sarah (1835), Jane (1838), John (1840), Mary (1842), George (1846), Jabez (1847) and Rebecca (1852). After Thomas' death in 1860 she married widower Edward Phillips and lived with him in Kedington, Suffolk until her death in 1890.
  • Mahala bp 3 May 1810 and died on Christmas Day 1829 in Castle Camps.
  • Job born 6 Mar 1813 and buried 29 Jan 1834. He died after an altercation at the local public house.
  • Clara born 19 Apr 1816 moved to Lancashire and married William Thomas ASHWORTH in 1842. THey had Thomas (1844), Lydia (1845) and George (1848). Clara died in October 1873.
  • Jane born 30 Apr 1820 and married Joseph ROOKS on 22 Mar 1845. Their descendants can be found here. She died in 1892.

William died and was buried 3 Sep 1826 and his widow Sarah remarried John JEFFREY (bp 16 Mar 1776) on 4 Mar 1827 in Castle Camps.

John TAYLOR married Mary TURNER on 17 Jan 1809 witnessed by his brother William and Mary Baines.

  • Daniel bp 2 Dec 1810, In 1837 Daniel was transported to New South Wales, for 7 years for stealing 2 pigs from Charles Leonard. He was sentenced to 25 lashes in 1839 for for being out after hours. On his papers he was described as being of dark sallow complexion, with brown hair and eyes with an inwards cast in his left eye, and a scar on the little finger of his right hand. He is possibly the same Daniel that died aged 41 in Hobart, Tasmania in 1851.

Mary died before 1823 although no burial entry has been found, as on 13 Oct 1823 John remarried his second Mary (CLARK) John died and was buried 27 Mar 1832 aged 53 and his wife remarried Richard OVERHILL (bp 31 Mar 1799) on 12 Oct 1833. She died aged 87 in April 1856.

Sophia TAYLOR married William WINTERFLOOD in Castle Camps on 20 Feb 1831.

  • Mary Ann WINTERFLOOD bp 26 May 1831 and buried 28 May 1831
  • Mary Ann WINTERFLOOD bp 12 Aug 1832 married Joseph BARRETT 14 Oct 1853 Castle Camps.
  • Emma WINTERFLOOD bp 5 Jul 1835 and buried 12 Jul 1835.
  • John WINTERFLOOD bp 9 Oct 1835
  • Elijah WINTERFLOOD bp 17 Nov 1838 and buried 25 Oct 1840.
  • Charles WINTERFLOOD bp 25 Jul 1840 married Jane 28 Dec 1861
  • Sarah WINTERFLOOD bp 10 Nov 1844
  • James WINTERFLOOD bp 9 May 1847 and married Rosetta RAWLINGSON 29 Jan 1866
  • Susan WINTERFLOOD bp 9 Jun 1849 and married George GREYGOOSE on 11 Jan 1869
  • Eliza WINTERFLOOD bp 14 Dec 1851 and married Isaac AGER 4 Nov 1871
  • Jonathan WINTERFLOOD bp 4 Jun 1858

James TAYLOR married Eliza BUTTERFIELD (the daughter of Thomas and Sarah BUTTERFIELD born 29 Dec 1815) on 6 June 1834 in Castle Camps. Eliza was the eldest of 9 children in the Butterfield family. Her siblings married into the Gibbs, Barker and Cowell families.
