Francis Rooks was born on 14 Aug 1817 in Castle Camps and was baptised on 7 Sep 1817 in the parish church All Saints. He married Mary Bretton, daughter of Stephen Bretton and Hannah, on 3 Aug 1840 when he was nearly 23 and she was 19. Mary Bretton was born on 12 Mar 1821 in Castle Camps, baptized on 8 Jul 1821 and was buried on 17 Sep 1848. (Three years later Francis' sister Ann married Mary's brother Charles.)
They had the following children all born in Castle Camps:
- Joseph was baptized on 29 Jun 1840 and died on 11 Mar 1920 in Bairnsdale,Vic, Australia. He married Catherine McNAMARA in 1872 and had 3 children.
- Hannah was baptized on 2 Apr 1843 in Castle Camps and married Henry GREEN in 1861 in Australia.
- Jane was baptized on 14 Dec 1845 and married John BOULTON in 1867 in Australia. She had a daughter who died in infancy in 1863.
- Mark was baptized on 13 Jun 1847 in Castle Camps and died aged 11 after a freak accident when a tree fell on him.
After his wife Mary (Bretton) died aged only 27, Francis married Mary COWELL, aged about 23, on 24 Mar 1850 in Castle Camps. She had a daughter, Sophia COWELL (later know as Sophia Rooks) who was born about 1844, was baptized on 9 Jun 1845 in Castle Camps. Sophia married Richard LOVE and had 17 children. You can contact Sophy's descednant Lynda Grierson.
In 1851 the family lived in Camps End but soon after emigrated to Australia on the "Tudor", headed for Aitkens Creek and arriving 30 December 1854. They spent the rest of their lives in Victoria where Francis died at the ripe old age of 82 in 1899. He left his step daughter Sophy LOVE twenty pounds in his will, and the remainder of his estate to his son Joseph Rooks of Nicholson River near Sarsfield. Perhaps we could assume that Hannah and Jane had predeceased him? His wife, the second Mary, died in 1911 in Lancefield.
