William (born in Horseheath) and Charlotte Carter (née Willis of Hempstead) came to Castle Camps by 1841 when they were living between the Joseph Butterfield family and the James Leonard family in Camps village and William was working as an ag lab. They had been married in 1836 in Shudy Camps, and by 1851 had children Betsey, William and Mary Ann. William was now listed as shopkeeper in Camps Green, a profession he combined with running a beer house, and carried on until his death in 1876. 1861 sees Betsey named as Eleanor, and more sons: Bennet Saul, Albert Gershom and Manessah. Another son Ephraim is born about 1862.
