Lest We Forget

War Memorial 1908 In 1917 the rector wrote a list of parishioners who had been killed or who were missing in action from August 1914 to January 1918. He added three further men after that date, in all 27 men. Their names are in the order presented in this list. He made a further list of all men who served in the Great War, transcribed below.

William LEONARD Private 6478 1st Batallion North Staffordshire Regiment. Died 14 June 1916 aged 30 years. Son of the late Charles and Emma Leonard. Husband of Annie Ethel Hawkes (formerly Leonard) of Bishop Auckland.

Ellis WOODLEY - Bombardier 14450 "C" Bty. 163rd Bde, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 7 March 1916 aged 22 years. Son of Barnard & Kate Woodley, Castle Camps.

Frederick EGAN Able Seaman 8844 H.M.S/M "E24" Royal Navy, died 27 March 1916, aged 21 years. Son of the late William & Martha Egan, Stepson of William & Lizzie Rayner, Coles Hill, Castle Camps

Alfred MIDDLEDITCH Likely the son of John and Rosetta Middleditch and elder brother of Joseph below, bc 1875 and living in Castle CAmps with his parents in 1891.

Arthur PETTIT Private 17982 10th Batallion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Died 1 July 1916. Son of William and Elizabeth Pettit and baptised in Castle Camps 2 Feb 1893.

Thomas WHITE Likely Thomas Alfred Harper WHITE bc 1875 in Stoke Newington, nephew of William and Ellen TILBROOK and working for them at Whitensmere in 1911.

Walter DOCKRILL - Private 20886 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, died of wounds 22 August 1916, aged 20 years. Son of Alfred & May Dockrill, Westoe Farm, Bartlow, born Little Wratting.

Frank PEARL - Private 26634 14th Battalion Hampshire Regiment, died of wounds 18 October 1916, aged 25 years. Son of Bennett & Julia Pearl, Castle Camps.

Joseph MIDDLEDITCH Private 23778 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, died 9 October 1916 aged 20 years. Son of Mrs Rosetta Middleditch, 9 New Row, Castle Camps.

Richard RAWLINSON - Private 26740 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment. Died 9 October 1916. Son of James and Emma Rawlinson and baptised in the Congregational Church on 9 March 1879.

Frank WENHAM Lance Corporal 14754 8th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, died of wounds 12 March 1917, age 20 years. Son of John & Janetta Wenham, Church Lane, Castle Camps.

Walter BARRETT - Private G/7579 6th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), died 9 April 1917, aged 21 years. Son of William & Harriet Barrett, Church Rd, Castle Camps.

Joseph ROOKS - Private G/67705 Royal Fusiliers attd. 2nd/3rd Bn., London Regt (London Fusiliers) Died 26 October 1917 aged 19 years. Son of Emily Rooks, Castle Camps.

Alexander FREE - Private 201572 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, died 22 November 1917, age 32 years. Son of Walter & Eliza Free, husband of Ethel Free, Oakfield Cottage, Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire

Fred WRIGHT Octavius Frederick, the son of Walter and Maria Wright, born in 1892. He died 24 August 1917, in France, fighting for the Canadian Army and is commemorated in Vimy, France.

William WOODLEY Private 40732 1st Battalion Essex Regiment, died 14 April 1917, aged 25 years. Son of Barnard & Kate Woodley, Castle Camps and brother of Ellis. (Parish notes "mining")

Walter PETTIT - Private 131984 35th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Inf), died 17 April 1918, aged 19 years. Son of William Pettit, Bumpstead Rd, Castle Camps.

Bertie PRENTICE - Private 41039 (formerly 4612) 12th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, died of wounds 22 March 1918 and buried in Bac-Du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleulval, France. He was the son of Louisa Prentice and baptised in Shudy Camps in 1897.

Francis GREENGRASS - Private 45591 15th Battalion The Queen's Regiment transferred to (73423) Labour Corps, died 17 october 1917, aged 40. Buried All Saints Church Castle Camps. Also known as Frank GORLEY. Lived in Tottenham.

Fred WENHAM - Private 722966 24th Battalion London Regiment, died 5 December 1917 aged 25 years. Son of Albert & Ellen Wenham, 1 Alpha Terrace, Castle Camps.

Joseph Thomas READER - Private 78525 89th Training Res Battalion Suffolk Regiment Labour Corps, died 27 June 1918. Born in Nottingham, lived in Castle Camps.

Maurice M M CARTER Lance Corporal 180597 2nd Light Trench Mortar Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. Died 24 October 1918.
